Rebellion shows off AvP at SFX!

Rebellion recently got offered the opportunity to showcase the multiplayer component of Aliens vs Predator ahead of the February launch date at the SFX Weekender, held at Pontins in Camber Sands. Upon arrival our three volunteers (Andy Dunn (QA), Eric Miller (Assistant Producer) and Oly Scott (QA)) met with a handful of SEGA representatives and set to work making the designated 'Games Zone' look a bit more befitting of our game. Following the delivery of some truly epic posters and after some pretty handy work with some camo nets and spinning amber lights our work was done. We then had a moment to stop and take in the atmosphere of what would be our home for the next three days.

Spread across a number of halls were a collection of stages and trader stalls exhibiting everything that is geek in all its Sci-Fi related flavours. Over the course of the weekend the Rebellionites would find themselves mingling with the masses to the promote the game whilst occasionally nipping out for a bit of hero worshipping of people such as Dave Gibbons, James Marsters and Gerry Anderson.

Over the course of our residency at Pontins hundreds of people came through the Games Zone doors to play AvP. With such a large audience we were dubious as to how well it would be received given the varying degree of prior knowledge and interest people had in the game, but after the first day we had our answer: people loved it, time and time again we received praise and positive comments about the game. Once people had gotten to grips with the controls they were encouraged to explore the combat system and before long we had people blocking, countering and grappling with as much fluidity as our in-house testers! Constant rotation of the maps and game modes kept the game fresh and we found people regularly coming back for a second play.

Its worth noting that while all this was going on SFX approved dance/circus/costume company Area51 were working the crowd with their extensive collection of spectacular costumes and circus performers. Stilt walkers, snake charmers, mad scientists, storm troopers and even the Stay Puft marshmallow man all made an appearance throughout the weekend - top notch entertainment for an already busy weekend full of celebrities, workshops and discussion panels.

The highlight of the weekend, however, came on Saturday evening when we were treated to the audible delights of Pat Sharpe DJing at the masquerade ball. By this point we had already spent a few hours in the pub downstairs chatting with the 2000AD gang as well as artists Leigh Gallagher and Clint Langley (obtaining personalised sketches to boot!) and so we ventured up to the ball en masse to enjoy Pat's cheesy 80s themes, surrounded by people in fancy dress of all shapes and sizes. Never has a room full of costumed convention-goers looked so pleased to be entertained by a long forgotten kids tv presenter. The cherry on top of the Rebellion AvP SFX cake!

AvP Matchmaking Patched

Unprecedented demand for Aliens vs Predator following the release of the cross-platform demo yesterday morning brought to light matchmaking issues resulting in players having to wait to join games, or even not find games at all.

We’re pleased to say later in the day the issue was corrected and a small patch to the PC executable next time you launch it from Steam will have you finding and playing games using Quick Match as it was intended.

While this issue did not affect the Xbox 360, we are with SEGA’s assistance investigating reports of a similar nature on the PlayStation 3 and working flat out on a solution.

The full game features the ability to browse for and create games but for the purposes of simplicity the demo was limited to matchmaking, alongside the ability to set up groups with friends which mitigated yesterday’s issues for many.

We’re really sorry that this issue tainted a day in which we saw many people get hands on with AvP for the first time and we’re hugely gratified by the positive feedback to the game.

Rebellion Group Positions itself for Growth in 2010

Leading independent videogames developer Rebellion today announced that corporate restructuring will take advantage of the expanded facilities at their Oxford Head Quarters and the Runcorn studio. The Derby facility, acquired from Eidos, is coming to the end of its lease, and staff are being consulted on its future.

Jason Kingsley, CEO and Creative Director of Rebellion said, "We are very excited about the expansion of our Oxford offices, the home of Aliens vs. Predator. Recruitment is ongoing both in Oxford and in Runcorn. However, growth is sometimes painful, never more so than in the current climate and we have had to take a long hard look at how we operate our studio network. Strategically we have decided to review the need for the Derby facilities, and consultation with staff at Derby is ongoing.”

A further announcement on the restructuring of the Rebellion studio network will be made in the coming weeks.

AvP Dedicated Server Support

Despite rumours, Rebellion has always been planning to support dedicated servers for AvP PC and we can now officially confirm that this is the case. Rebellion has always appreciated fan support. We're really looking forward to the release of AvP as much as you guys are!

Aliens Vs Predator to take Centre Stage at Windows 7 Worldwide Launch

Aliens Vs. Predator, developed by leading UK studio Rebellion and published by SEGA, will be featured as part of the Windows 7 worldwide launch event in New York today.

An exclusive trailer of the new game, scheduled for launch in 2010, has been prepared to showcase the graphical quality and gameplay of Windows 7.

Rebellion, the studio responsible for the original Aliens Vs. Predator in 1999 and for franchises such as the Simpsons, Harry Potter and Star Wars, has been developing Aliens Vs. Predator over the past two years and has paid considerable attention to the visual and emotional impact that the game will deliver.

Working closely with AMD, Rebellion has utilised their new DirectX 11 hardware - designed specifically to operate with Windows 7 - to develop a game which could arguably become the benchmark for high impact 3D visuals, depth and tone in PC gaming for 2010 and beyond.

Chris Kingsley, CTO of Rebellion said, “For Aliens Vs. Predator to be an integral part of the Windows 7 worldwide launch is an honour for us. The Aliens Vs. Predator brand is very close to Rebellion’s heart, and when we had the opportunity to revisit the franchise we wanted to push some very big boundaries hence teaming up with AMD and a strong focus on developing the PC version for Windows 7.”

Jason Kingsley, CEO and Creative Director of Rebellion said, “When Aliens Vs Predator was first launched in 1999, it completely engaged gamers with its terrifying atmosphere and the visuals, sound and script made it a classic. With Windows 7, AMD’s DirectX 11 and our own Asura engine, the technology we have been waiting for is now available and we have been able to realise our vision and put all of our ideas into effect. Windows 7 is a major step forward in PC gaming.”

Chris concludes, “We’ve been able to exploit areas never before attempted in 3D graphical terms. For example, the Shader Model 5.0 has provided incredible shadow and depth of field to the game, and also multi-threaded rendering has allowed enormous detail to be built into the characters and environments without incurring any frame rate issues.”

“Aliens Vs. Predator is a great example of how game makers can take advantage of the Windows 7 technology,” said Mike Ybarra, general manager of Windows Product Management at Microsoft. “The 3D rendering coupled with DirectX 11 raises the bar on the gaming experience.”

The Windows 7 worldwide launch event takes place in New York on Thursday 22nd October 2009.

Addition of DirectX 11 To Offer High Impact 3D Graphics With Unprecedented Detail And Depth

In 1999, Rebellion developed a PC game that earned a place in gaming history with its innovative blend of cutting-edge gameplay and technology to provide a truly terrifying gaming experience. Ten years on, and Rebellion is at the helm of Twentieth Century Fox’s Aliens Vs. Predator franchise, and once again, they’re pushing some very important boundaries with the inclusion of DirectX 11.

The addition of DirectX 11 hardware tessellation enables Rebellion to capture the detail, essence and tone of the Aliens and Predator movies, providing players with the most unique gaming experience in franchise history.

Chris Kingsley, CTO of Rebellion said,, “DirectX 11 provides opportunities never exploited before in 3D graphical terms, with features such as the Shader Model 5.0 providing better shadow and depth of field aspects to the game, and also multi-threaded rendering enabling the Aliens Vs. Predator futuristic characters and environments to be realised in exacting detail but with absolutely no frame rate issues. We are confident we will deliver a game the fans have been waiting for and one of which we will be very proud.

Chris Southall, Technical Director at SEGA Europe added, “With the advent of DirectX 11 on PC and the new DirectX 11 class graphics hardware, the increased speed, realism and fidelity of rendering mean that it’s possible to achieve more in a videogame than ever before. SEGA is delighted to be working with Rebellion and AMD to maximise the use of this new technology for Aliens vs. Predator, and we feel both these partners are really doing something very special. Aliens vs. Predator is set to be one of SEGA’s biggest ever titles, and we are very happy that it will also be one of the very first DirectX 11 titles out to market.”

Gary Rosenfeld, Senior Vice President, New Media for Fox Licensing commented, “Rebellion knows the Aliens Vs. Predator franchise almost as well as we do. We can’t wait for gamers to see what they’re ready to unleash now that they have the ability to craft a game in even greater detail. It’s going to be great.

Aliens Vs. Predator is the property of Twentieth Century Fox and licensed through Twentieth Century Fox Licensing and Merchandising (Fox Licensing).

Reef Brings Rogue to Wii

Reef Entertainment has confirmed it has agreed an exclusive deal with the UK Developer Rebellion to launch their 2000 AD character Rogue Trooper© videogame globally on Wii™.

For those who don’t know the character, Rogue Trooper© is a genetically engineered soldier of the future, and is unique in videogames as he has an distinct armoury; a rifle, helmet and backpack, which contain the ‘personalities’ of his fallen comrades, providing him the capabilities of 4 soldiers in one. A ‘biochip’ is installed within each ‘Genetic Infantryman’ or ‘GI’ from birth which then records their personalities and training upon their death. These biochips are then removed and can then be inserted within energized slots on a fellow GI’s rifle, helmet or backpack to secure them for their return to base and re-cloning.

Rogue Trooper©: The Quartz Zone Massacre is the story of how Rogue Trooper© and his comrades are betrayed by a traitor general on their first mission to an area on Nu Earth known as the Quartz Zone. Only Rogue survives, and joined by his fallen comrades within his equipment, he begins a journey across Nu Earth to find the general and unleash his revenge!

Officially European No. 1

With the DEVELOP 100 published earlier today, Rebellion has achieved its long-term aim following global hits such as The Simpsons Game and Star Wars Battlefront: Renegade Squadron by becoming Europe’s No.1 Independent Developer.

Jason Kingsley, CEO and Creative Director said, "Rebellion has been in this business for 16 years and never once have we tired of striving to develop innovative, exciting and above all, quality games. Our successes in 2007/8 have been the culmination of product focus, fantastic publisher relationships, inward investment and recruiting the very best people in the business. Now we’ve reached No.1 in Europe, please don’t expect us to slow down!"

Chris Kingsley, CTO adds, “Overall, 2007/8 could be called our best years so far, but we have a number of projects fully underway which we believe will push Rebellion even higher in the rankings, so there’s definitely more to come!”

Jason concludes, “Rebellion has done very well and we’re rightly proud of our achievements, but none of this would have been possible without the passion, commitment and talent of our teams and it’s to them we thank for our successes.”

Rebellion Rules the PSP Chart

Rebellion, the UK Super-Developer, has had one of its most successful starts to any year during its 15-year history with all 3 of its recent PSP products enjoying Top 10 UK chart status.

The Simpsons Game with EA, Aliens Vs. Predator: Requiem with Sierra and Star Wars: Renegade Squadron with LucasArts have secured No. 1, 8 & 10 positions respectively. Not only that, Rebellion has produced the lion’s share of The Simpsons Game formats including Wii and PS2, which have maintained their Top 10 chart positions throughout January.

Jason Kingsley CEO and Creative Director said, ‘Being Independent does allow a number of options in our approach to producing games. Using The Simpsons Game as an example, we produced a multi-format game of one of EA’s global IP’s within the designated time scale and on budget, due in most part, to our flexibility and in-house technology. Also, being an Independent meant we were respected by the brand owners and able to provide unbiased views and opinions throughout the development of the game which ultimately helped maintain its quality and direction. This is especially true when looking at the success of our other PSP games at the moment.’

Chris Kingsley CTO continued; ‘We have our own method of game development and we’re happy to say it is working wonderfully! Every one of our games released in 2007 went Top 10, a fact we’re very proud of. From the studio acquisitions, staff recruitment and restructuring which has been implemented year-on-year, all of our efforts are coming to fruition. Our next big step is the move to our purpose built studio in Oxford later this year. From there, our aim is to maintain the influx of new and exciting talent to our studios, build on our relationships with our partners and to complete our next-gen games for 2008 and 2009.’

Jason concludes; ‘It seems as if every month a successful studio is being bought and brought into the publisher fold and in time we could run the risk that the industry loses the vitality and innovation that independent studios offer. So for this month we’re proud to be flying the UK Independent flag!'

Free Running on "Worlds Biggest TV"

To coincide with the European release of Free Running on PS2 and PSP, Rebellion and Reef Entertainment together with the Chief Marketing Office (CMO) in Rotterdam, Netherlands, have conducted the world’s biggest videogame projection on the Nedlloyd building in the City.

As part of Rotterdam’s ‘City of Architecture 2007’ event, the ‘Free Running Gameplay’ was the first prize for the lucky winner of regional heats leading up to the premiere on Saturday 14th April.

The Free Running videogame, launched across Europe on Friday 20th April, is based upon the extreme sport of Parkour, which featured in the recent James Bond movie ‘Casino Royale’.

Jason Kingsley, CEO of Rebellion said, ‘Associating Free Running with the Rotterdam ‘City of Architecture 2007’ event made perfect sense. The CMO are communicating Rotterdam as a youth orientated city and playing an urban-sport focused videogame on one of the City’s key buildings actively engages with and encourages the young people of Rotterdam to get involved with new and exciting projects. It was an opportunity not to be missed.

Peter Rezon, CEO of Reef Entertainment said, ‘When we began to work with the CMO, the idea of the projection – on what turned out to be arguably the world’s biggest TV - worked well because of its unique environment. We’re really pleased with the results.’

The Nedlloyd building is one of the largest in Rotterdam, standing at over 20 floors, overlooking the main waterway and is at the centre of Rotterdam. The Free Running projection could be seen from over 5 miles away.

It is estimated that over 130,000 people saw the event across Rotterdam during the 2 hour event and was hailed by Rotterdam’s CMO as ‘a great success’.

Pro-G Awards 2006

Eidos released some really impressive games in 2006, with Tomb Raider Legend and Hitman Blood Money both appearing high in our Games of the Year awards. They released another action game though; one that seemingly came out of nowhere. Rogue Trooper from Rebellion is based on the comic of the same name, and combined impressive production values with some brilliant AI, inventive game mechanics and superb fire-fights. It's quite common for a game to sneak onto store shelves without much press, but for a game of this quality to do so simply didn't do it justice. Rogue Trooper also made it 12th in their top 50 ahead of some big titles for 2006.

Rebellion WIns at Tiga 2006

Jason Kingsley, CEO and Creative Director said; "2006 has been a fantastic year for us, and to win these awards is the perfect way to end the year. This year we"ve grown into one of the biggest independent studios in Europe with the integration of the famous Core Design and Strangelite studios, launched our second 2000 AD-based and double BAFTA-Nominated game Rogue Trooper, completed GUN: Showdown with Activision and most importantly Miami Vice with Vivendi, so it"s been a very exciting time to say the least! "

Chris Kingsley, CTO added; "We've grown significantly over the past 12 months, with many internal changes, but we"ve been continually focused on product quality, and especially on product innovation. 2006 has been an excellent year and to win the TIGA awards for Best Developer and Best Handheld/Console game is a great vote of confidence from our peers".

Jason concludes; "We'd like to thank everyone who voted for us, our publishing partners for their support, but above all we thank our teams at all three Rebellion studios because it"s through their creativity, hard work and dedication that we move forward and improve our games. Roll on 2007!".

Reef Announces Free Running

Reef Entertainment, publisher of Rebellion’s new extreme sports franchise Free Running on PS2 and PSP has officially announced the game to an expectant market.

"This is a major coup for us” said Reef’s CEO Peter Rezon, "Free Running or Le Parkour, as it’s known in France, has been one of the fastest growing underground youth sports over the past two years, gaining massive popularity around the world."

Peter Rezon continues, "With a breakout into the mainstream for it’s leading exponents and high profile recognition of the sport through films such as District 13, the new James Bond movie - Casino Royale and Madonna’s music video for her Number 1 single ‘Jump’, everyone is beginning to see just how exciting this sport is. We are expecting great things from the game."

Rebellion acquired all rights to Free Running game along with the registered trademarks, through its acquisition of the former Core Design Studios in Derby from Eidos earlier in the year.

"We recognised the games potential immediately.” said Chris Kingsley CTO of Rebellion, "Coupled with the feedback we received from focus groups and leading lights from the sport itself reinforces our conviction that Free Running will be a huge success."

Jason Kingsley CEO and Creative Director of Rebellion commented "Free Running is currently QA’s favourite game, which is a very good sign. Some players have described it as ‘Tony Hawks without the skateboard’ if we get anywhere near that level of success, we’ll be immensely pleased."

In addition to featuring characters based on the leading free runners in Europe, Free Running has been developed with the help of the sports brand specialist Adidas. Their Free Running apparel and high fashion training shoes all feature in-game.

Peter Rezon concludes; "The initial launch will take place across Europe in Q1 2007, with the US release coming shortly after that. The feedback from partners and distributors who have seen the game has been excellent and we expect to see significant sales from this release."
